Soil Calculator FAQ

How many bags of soil are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. At our standard 1.5 cubic-foot bag size that's 18 bags per cubic yard. If you're using 1 cubic-foot bags it's 27 bags, and for 2 cubic-foot bags it's about 14 bags.

How much soil do I need for a 4x8 raised bed?

A 4 ft by 8 ft raised bed filled 12 inches deep needs 32 cubic feet of soil — about 1.2 cubic yards, or roughly 21 of our 1.5 cubic-foot bags. Fill it 6 inches and you'll need half that.

How deep should I fill my garden bed?

Most raised beds and vegetable gardens do best with 10–12 inches of soil. For top-dressing an existing lawn or bed, 1–2 inches is plenty. Deep-rooted crops like tomatoes and carrots prefer the full 12 inches.

Should I order bulk by the yard or buy bags?

Bulk by the cubic yard is the better value once you need about a yard or more — it works out far cheaper per cubic foot than bags and there's no plastic to dispose of. For small container or patio projects under a yard, bags are easier to handle.
